Installed grab bars in Ottawa: what does each one cost?
Installed grab bars in Ottawa: what does each one cost?
Published 2025–26 guides put the installed cost of a grab bar at about $200 to $400 per bar. Where the wall is already closed and blocking needs to be added first, expect extra cost on top of that figure.
What shows up in a quote for this job: the number of bars, whether the existing wall has blocking or studs where the bars will go, and any patching and repainting after the wall is opened. The Ontario Building Code (Article 9.31.2.3) requires that where grab bars are provided in a home, they resist a load of at least 1.3 kN applied vertically or horizontally. Ask the contractor how they will confirm the mounting meets that standard.
On permits: grab bars are not on the City of Ottawa's published list of projects that require a permit, nor on the list of projects that do not. Ask the City of Ottawa's Building Code Services how they treat your specific job before work starts. The owner and the builder are equally liable under the Building Code Act if a required permit is not obtained.
One funding note, since cost is the question: the Home Accessibility Tax Credit (CRA line 31285) lets an eligible person claim up to $20,000 of eligible expenses a year. Keep agreements, invoices and receipts showing the contractor's name and business address, GST/HST number if applicable, a description of the work, the dates, and proof of payment. Amounts here are checked September 2026.
Ask each contractor to spell out in writing the number and location of bars, whether blocking or wall repair is included in the price, any permit costs, patching and finishing, and the dates work will start and finish.
