What Grab Bars Cost in Ottawa, and What May Help Pay for Them
Published guides put an installed grab bar at about $200 to $400 per bar. Adding blocking where the wall is already closed costs extra. Below the price are the programs that list grab bars; each program decides who is eligible and what it pays.

3 Plan the order
Some programs will not pay for work done before they approve it, so the order matters.
- Get written quotes. Price, scope and dates, in writing. March of Dimes: from a registered medical vendor, supplier or contractor. Ontario Renovates: verified project quotes.
- March of Dimes: apply, then wait for authorization. No repayment for costs before it.
- Ontario Renovates: apply, then wait for approval. Work before approval is not eligible; open until March 31, 2027.
- Settle the permit question. Grab bars are not on the City's permit lists; ask Building Code Services.
- Sign a written contract, then start.
- Keep invoices and receipts for a tax claim. The CRA decides each claim.
4 The rules that apply
Grab bars are not on either of the City of Ottawa's permit lists; ask Building Code Services. Where grab bars are provided in a home, the Ontario Building Code says they must resist a load of at least 1.3 kN applied vertically or horizontally (Article 9.31.2.3).
5 What a fair quote lists
- The number of bars and where each one goes
- What each bar is anchored into
- Blocking, if a closed wall needs it
- Patching and repainting
- Start and completion dates
Ask before you sign
- What will each bar be fixed into, and how do you confirm it meets the 1.3 kN load rule?
- Is blocking included, or priced separately?
- Will you give me a written quote I can send to a funding program first?

Questions
Does the Building Code require blocking for grab bars?
For new houses, Article 9.5.2.4 requires reinforcement where studs enclose the main bathroom, so grab bars can be added later. We did not find whether a renovation must add it; ask the City if your project opens those walls.
Does the Seniors Care at Home credit cover grab bars?
It is a credit on eligible medical expenses for people who turned 70 or older in the year (or whose spouse or partner did), under its own rules. Its list names bathroom aids such as grab bars; the program decides what counts.
