What a Platform or Porch Lift Costs in Ottawa, and What May Help Pay for It
We found too few published prices for platform or porch lifts to show a range, so this page sets out what a quote should list, the rules, and the programs that list these lifts. Each program decides who is eligible and what it pays.
1 What published guides show
Ask for a written quote that lists the unit, the base or pit, any electrical work and any permit.
Published Ontario and Canadian installer guides, 2025–26; installed. Yours will differ. How we set these ranges
2 Programs that may help pay
- Home Accessibility Tax CreditSee its conditions
- Ontario Renovates (City of Ottawa)See its conditions
- Home and Vehicle Modification ProgramLists vertical platform lifts (not in rental situations). Outdoor lifts: applications April 1 to October 31.
- Ontario Seniors Care at Home Tax CreditSee its conditions
The CRA's medical expense list includes a power-operated lift designed only for a person with a disability, with "prescription needed". The CRA sets the conditions.
Each program decides who is eligible and what it pays; nothing here is subtracted from the price. Checked September 2026.
3 Plan the order
Some programs will not pay for work done before they approve it, so the order matters.
- Get written quotes. Price, scope and dates, in writing. March of Dimes: from a registered medical vendor, supplier or contractor. Ontario Renovates: verified project quotes.
- March of Dimes: apply, then wait for authorization. No repayment for costs before it. Applications for outdoor lifts and ramps with concrete work are accepted only from April 1 to October 31.
- Ontario Renovates: apply, then wait for approval. Work before approval is not eligible; open until March 31, 2027.
- Settle the permit question. Platform lifts are not on the City's permit lists; a new floor or wall opening may be structural, so ask Building Code Services.
- Sign a written contract, then start.
- Keep invoices and receipts for a tax claim. The CRA decides each claim.
4 The rules that apply
Platform lifts are not on either of the City of Ottawa's permit lists; a lift that needs a new opening in a floor or wall may be a structural alteration, which is on the permit list. Zoning By-law 2026-50 gives accessibility structures and devices no setback or projection limit but does not define the term, so confirm a porch lift with the City. Ontario Regulation 209/01 does not apply in a private dwelling house used only by the occupants and their guests unless the owner asks in writing, nor to lifts for persons with physical disabilities that rise 600 mm or less and are not accessible to the general public.
5 What a fair quote lists
- The unit, by make and model
- The base or pit
- Any electrical work
- Any structural work and who asks the City about a permit
- Start and completion dates
Ask before you sign
- Is this lift for a home that is rented? (the March of Dimes program does not fund vertical platform lifts in rental situations)
- Does the installation need a new floor or wall opening?
- Will you give me a written quote I can send to a funding program first?
