What Threshold and Level-Floor Work Costs in Ottawa, and What May Help Pay for It
We found too few published prices for threshold work to show a range, so this page sets out what a quote should name, the permit position, and the program that lists anti-slip flooring. Each program decides who is eligible.
1 What published guides show
Ask for a quote that names each doorway and the flooring on both sides.

2 Programs that may help pay
- Home Accessibility Tax CreditSee its conditions
- Ontario Renovates (City of Ottawa)See its conditions
- Home and Vehicle Modification ProgramLists anti-slip flooring (vinyl or ceramic tiles only).
- Ontario Seniors Care at Home Tax CreditSee its conditions
Each program decides who is eligible and what it pays; nothing here is subtracted from the price. Checked September 2026.
3 Plan the order
Some programs will not pay for work done before they approve it, so the order matters.
- Get written quotes. Price, scope and dates, in writing. March of Dimes: from a registered medical vendor, supplier or contractor. Ontario Renovates: verified project quotes.
- March of Dimes: apply, then wait for authorization. No repayment for costs before it.
- Ontario Renovates: apply, then wait for approval. Work before approval is not eligible; open until March 31, 2027.
- Settle the permit question. New flooring does not need a permit; describe anything beyond it to Building Code Services.
- Sign a written contract, then start.
- Keep invoices and receipts for a tax claim. The CRA decides each claim.
4 The rules that apply
"New flooring" is on the City of Ottawa's list of projects that do not need a permit. Structural and plumbing alterations are on the permit list, so describe anything beyond the flooring to the City. The 13 mm bevel rule you may see quoted is a public-building reference (Article 3.8.1.3), not a rule for your house.
5 What a fair quote lists
- Each doorway, by room
- The flooring on both sides
- Any lowered or removed threshold
- Patching and finishing
- Start and completion dates
Ask before you sign
- What will you do at each doorway?
- Is any work beyond the flooring itself?
- Will you give me a written quote I can send to a funding program first?
