Does March of Dimes fund grab bars for Ottawa seniors?

Question

Does March of Dimes fund grab bars for Ottawa seniors?

Answer from Accessibility IQ

Yes, grab bars are on the March of Dimes Canada Home and Vehicle Modification Program's list of eligible modifications. Whether any individual application is approved is a separate matter: the program decides eligibility, funding is not guaranteed, and the program will not repay any cost incurred before it authorizes the work.

To be considered, an applicant must be a permanent Ontario resident, in financial need under the program's after-tax household income limits, and have a permanent, ongoing or recurring disability that impedes mobility and substantially restricts activities of daily living. The program funds solutions as recommended by an Occupational Therapist, and quotes must come from a registered medical vendor or supplier or contractor. The lifetime maximum for home modifications is $15,000, across all modifications combined, not per item.

A few practical points worth knowing before applying. The program's lifetime cap covers all home modifications, so grab bars draw from the same pool as any other modification the program may fund now or in the future. The program will not reimburse work done before authorization, so the order of steps matters: apply, wait for approval, then have the work done. Renters need landlord approval; condo owners need a letter from the condo board. Neither of those applies to a homeowner in a freestanding house, but it is worth confirming the property type with the program when applying.

On the cost side, published 2025-26 prices for grab bar installation run about $200 to $400 per bar. Adding blocking where the wall is already closed costs extra, and the number of bars and locations affects the total.

For the Home Accessibility Tax Credit, the CRA lets an eligible person claim up to $20,000 of eligible expenses a year; grab bars that become a permanent part of the home may qualify, and the CRA sets the conditions. Amounts checked September 2026.

Before you commit to a contractor, ask them whether they meet the program's requirement of being a registered medical vendor, supplier or contractor, since that is a condition of the March of Dimes quote process.
