Curved rails in Ottawa homes: why does the price jump?
Curved rails in Ottawa homes: why does the price jump?
A curved stair lift runs about $10,000 to $15,000 or more in published 2025–26 prices, compared with about $3,000 to $6,000 for a straight lift. We found no published source that explains the gap; the guides give the two ranges without breaking them down.
Seeing where the money goes
Ask each contractor to break the quote into the rail, the lift unit, installation labour, and any patching or finishing. Ask the contractor to show you each line item so you can see where the money goes.
On the regulatory side, Ontario Regulation 209/01 under the Technical Standards and Safety Act covers stair chair lifts and platform lifts, but the Regulation does not apply to elevating devices in or in connection with a private dwelling house used exclusively by the occupants and their guests, unless the owner requests in writing that it apply. TSSA licenses elevating-device contractors and mechanics for the devices its Regulation covers. TSSA publishes a questionnaire to help determine whether a home counts as a private dwelling house under the Regulation; if there is any uncertainty about your situation, that questionnaire is the place to start.
A lift that requires a new opening in a floor or wall may involve structural work, which is on the City of Ottawa's permit list. Describe the installation to Building Code Services before work begins.
A few things worth confirming in writing before you sign a contract: the total installed price and whether the quote covers patching and finishing after installation.
If your home is rented, shared or partly open to the public, check TSSA's questionnaire before committing.
