What a Stair Lift Costs in Ottawa, and What May Help Pay for It
Published guides put a straight stair lift at about $3,000 to $6,000 installed and a curved one at about $10,000 to $15,000 or more. Below the price are the programs that list stairlifts, each with its own rules. Nothing here subtracts a program from a price: each program decides who is eligible and what it pays.
1 What published guides show
- Straight stair lift $3,000 to $6,000 installed

- Ontario Renovates (City of Ottawa)Lists chair and bath lifts among eligible accessibility modifications.
- Home and Vehicle Modification ProgramLists stairlifts.
- Ontario Seniors Care at Home Tax CreditSee its conditions
The CRA's medical expense list includes a power-operated stair chair, with "prescription needed". The CRA sets the conditions.
Each program decides who is eligible and what it pays; nothing here is subtracted from the price. Checked September 2026.
3 Plan the order
Some programs will not pay for work done before they approve it, so the order matters.
- Get written quotes. Price, scope and dates, in writing. March of Dimes: from a registered medical vendor, supplier or contractor. Ontario Renovates: verified project quotes.
- March of Dimes: apply, then wait for authorization. No repayment for costs before it.
- Ontario Renovates: apply, then wait for approval. Work before approval is not eligible; open until March 31, 2027.
- Settle the permit question. Stair lifts are not on the City's permit lists; describe the installation to Building Code Services, especially if it opens a wall or floor.
- Sign a written contract, then start.
- Keep invoices and receipts for a tax claim. The CRA decides each claim.
4 The rules that apply
Stair lifts are not on either of the City of Ottawa's permit lists. Work that opens a wall or floor may be a structural alteration, which is on the permit list, so describe the installation to Building Code Services. Ontario Regulation 209/01 does not apply to a lift in a private dwelling house used only by the occupants and their guests, unless the owner asks in writing; TSSA's questionnaire decides whether a home counts.
5 What a fair quote lists
- Whether the quote is for a straight or a curved rail
- The lift unit and the installation labour as separate lines
- Any patching or finishing
- The warranty, in writing
- Start and completion dates
Ask before you sign
- Will you give me a written quote I can send to a funding program before any work starts?
- Are you a registered medical vendor, supplier or contractor for the March of Dimes program?
- Is this a fixed price or an estimate?

Questions
Does TSSA have to inspect a stair lift in my house?
Ontario Regulation 209/01 does not apply to devices in a private dwelling house used only by the people who live there and their guests, unless the owner asks in writing for it to apply. TSSA's own page adds that exempt devices may be regulated by other bodies, and its questionnaire decides whether a rented or shared home counts.
Can I get funding after the lift is in?
Not from the two grant programs: the March of Dimes program will not repay any cost before it authorizes the work, and Ontario Renovates says work done before approval is not eligible. The Home Accessibility Tax Credit is claimed on a tax return; the CRA decides each claim.
