My stair lift quote in Barrhaven is $14,000, is that high?

Question

My stair lift quote in Barrhaven is $14,000, is that high?

Answer from Accessibility IQ

Published 2025–26 guides show straight stair lifts installed at about $3,000 to $6,000, and curved stair lifts at about $10,000 to $15,000 or more, with complex stairs costing more. The figure you were quoted sits at the upper end of the curved-stair range, so the first question is whether your stairs are straight or curved.

Beyond straight versus curved, things that show up in a quote include patching and finishing work after installation, and permits.

If installing the lift involves opening a wall or floor, that may be a structural alteration, which is on the permit list, so describe the work to the City. Ontario Regulation 209/01, which covers elevating devices, does not apply to lifts in a private dwelling house used by the occupants and their guests, unless the owner requests in writing that it apply.

A few things worth confirming in writing before you agree to anything. Ask the contractor to break the quote into parts: the lift unit, the rail, installation labour, any patching or finishing, and permits if applicable. Ask whether the figure you were quoted is a fixed price or an estimate, because under the Consumer Protection Act, 2002, a supplier cannot charge more than 10 per cent over an estimate. If the quote was given at your home rather than at the contractor's place of business, it is a direct agreement under that Act and must be in writing; you then have 10 days after receiving the written copy to cancel without any reason.

The Construction Act requires an owner to hold back 10 per cent of the price as work is supplied; ask a lawyer about when it is safe to release that amount on a job this size.

The line to get in writing before you agree is what the quote covers for patching, finishing and any permit fees.
